Location:

     435 SW 2nd Street
     Deerfield Beach, FL 33441

The Broward County Historic Preservation Board is pleased to announce its 2026 Pioneer Day, hosted by the Deerfield Beach Historical Society and the City of Deerfield Beach, which is celebrating its 101st anniversary this year.

Tamara Bell has called Broward County home for approximately 20 years and has demonstrated a strong commitment to community service, education, genealogy, and the preservation of family history. She is the founding President of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society of South Florida (GSBC), Inc. and former Board Director, served on Program Committee, and a member of the Genealogical Society of Broward County.

Through her genealogy work, Tamara helps individuals discover, document, and preserve their family stories. She has mentored beginning researchers, supported community genealogy initiatives, and delivered educational presentations. Through the African American Research Library and Cultural

Center’s Genealogy 101 Series: Me, My Family and I, she served as a substitute instructor for sessions on Military Records and Freedmen’s Bureau Records. She has also completed genealogy training through the Midwest Afro-American Genealogical Institute (MAAGI).

Tamara’s commitment to preserving family and community history also extends to her own family. In 2025, she hosted her family’s 49th reunion in Broward County, continuing a reunion tradition spanning nearly five decades. The reunion was featured in Reunions Magazine, where her article, “Making Memories Together,” highlighted ways families can incorporate genealogy and preservation activities into their reunions.

Beyond genealogy, Tamara has contributed to the Broward County community through volunteer and civic service, including service with Lighthouse of Broward and on her condominium association board. Whether teaching, mentoring, volunteering, or connecting individuals with resources, she is

committed to expanding access to family-history education and helping others preserve the stories and legacies that strengthen families and communities.

Forgotten and Untranslated Documents: A Journey of Research and Unexpected Finds

A Chance Discovery: A hand-colored family tree sent from Poland to America 120 years ago launched David Light on an extraordinary journey connecting generations. Through Ancestry.com, David met a Rabbi in Los Angeles and relatives in Montreal who each possessed versions of the same tree. Neither group knew how to interpret it as it held no meaning until David deciphered it as if it were the Rosetta Stone, revealing generations of family connections.

Preserving the Shtetl of Orla: Returning to Orla, Poland—the shtetl of his family’s origin—David partnered with the town’s mayor to restore its 17th-century synagogue, now recognized among Europe’s “7 Most Endangered Heritage Sites” for 2025.

Rediscovered Voices: Yiddish letters written by his great-great-grandfather surfaced in 1976 but remained untranslated for decades—their ornate script concealing family stories now revealed through AI tools such as ChatGPT.

Legacy and Collaboration: David compiled his findings into a Shutterfly family history book. He also collaborated with renowned genealogist Eli Rabinowitz of Perth, Australia, to create a Kehilalink for Orla, adding digital information to the JewishGen Orla Kehilla website to ensure the community’s history endures.

Speaker:

David Light has been a resident of Miami-Dade County for over 51 years where he resides with his wife Lauren. The Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Miami (JGSGM) continues to mentor David as his research continues to evolve. His story shows how curiosity, technology, and perseverance can reconnect us to our ancestors and preserve their memories.
